From Lhasa to Kathmandu

A stunning journey on the amazing new Roof of the World railway thru breathtaking landscapes to Tibetan Capital, Lhasa, its temples, monasteries, its pilgrims. Then continue by road to the historic cities of Gyantse and Shigatse and finally across the border to the neighboring Himalayan country Nepal, known for its exquisite natural beauty, with the iconic Himalayas running across the northern and western part of the country. Eight of the ten highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest, reside within its borders. Although Nepal is a relatively small country in comparison with its neighbors, it has so much to offer - astonishingly diverse landscape, ancient Hindu temples, impressive Buddhist shrines and the lively alleyways in the old town.  

Day 1 and 2 Los Angeles/Guangzhou

Day 3 Guangzhou - Xining (D)
Arrive Guangzhou. Connect flight to Xining, Capital of Qinghai Province. Visit Qinghai Provincial Museum.

Day 4 Xining - On board Train to Lhasa (B, L, D)
This morning visit Kumbum monastery, one of the six great monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism and birthplace of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelugpa sect. In the afternoon board the train to Lhasa. Overnight on a “soft-sleeper bed”.

Day 5 Across the Tibetan Plateau to Lhasa (B, L, D)
As the train reaches Golmud early in the morning, you embark on the amazing Rail journey across permafrost and vast landscapes to the Tibetan Capital. Climbing to over 17000 ft, it is the highest railway on earth. Arrive Lhasa in the afternoon for 4-night stay.

Day 6-8 Lhasa (B, L, D)
Three full days in Lhasa. Visit the Dalai Lamas fabled winter residence - the Potala Palace, the Jokhang temple, the holiest spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism, Norbulingka, the Summer Palace of the 14th Dalai Lama. you will also visit Drepung and Sera monastery, if time permits visit the monastery of Ganden, 37 miles east of Lhasa. The situation of this monastery in the form of an amphitheatre alone makes the excursion worthwhile.

Day 9 Lhasa - Gyantse (B, L, D)
Begin the overland journey to Kathmandu. One of the first places that you will stop at while traveling along the majestic Friendship Highway is the Khamba La Pass. Enjoy the breathtaking view of the summit of Nazin Kang Sa and the spectacular turquoise colored Yamdrok Lake. While continuing westward you will travel over the Karo La, a high pass surrounded by stupendous glaciers. On to Gyantse through wonderful scenery of the vast land, magnificent valleys and exquisite Tibetan villages you pass through.

Day 10 Gyantse - Shigatse (B, L, D)
Visit GyantseDzong in the morning. Later, the famed Gyantse Kumbum Stupa. This magnificent tiered structure is the largest stupa in all of Tibet. Later proceed to Shigatse where you will visit the lavish Tashilhunpo monastery in the afternoon, the residence of the Panchen Lamas. Shigatse is the second largest city of Central Tibet.

Day 11 Shigatse - Tingri (B, L, D)
This stretch is some of the most spectacular landscape in Tibet. After passing through the small town of Lhatse you will cross Gyatmso La, the highest pass on your overland journey to Nepal. The land quickly descends to plains after Gyatmso La.

Day 12 Tingri - Zhangmu (B, L, D)
Continuing along the Friendship Highway you will leave Tingri and cross the Lalung La and the Shung La, two more incredible passes. The views from these passes are breathtaking. In the afternoon begin descending from the arid Tibetan plateau to a small town of Zhangmu.

Day 13 Zhangmu - Kathmandu (B, L, D)
Leave Zhangmu in the morning and head to the Nepalese border. Continue to city of Kathmandu, capital of Nepal.

Day 14 Kathmandu (B, L, D)
Tour of Kathmandu.Visit the Durbar Square, the Temple of the Living Goddess and the Royal Palace. Also visit the Pashupatinath, Nepal's holiest Hindu temple, and Bodhnath, one of the World's largest stupa.

Day 15 Kathmandu (B, L, D)
Morning visit Bhaktapur. Here, you'll visit the Lion Gate, the Picture Gallery, the Golden Gate and the Palace of 55 Windows. Also visit Patan, known as the town with a thousand golden roofs.
